Fall

Sadly, no one has yet invented a way for us to be in several places at once. But while we’re waiting, here are a few suggestions to start:

The Loire Valley, France

The wide, whirling Loire River ambles through the French countryside, passing by royal castles of immense grandeur, quaint villages, and smooth bike trails. The fertile banks allow for superior wine production. Those who want to learn about the local grapes can take their pick of excellent vineyard tours. For a particularly special experience, step into the Troglodytes, a series of cave dwellings built into the side of the region’s porous cliffs.

Best time to go: September-October for warm temperatures and the grape harvest

Peru

Machu Picchu is Peru’s most famous landmark, but represents only a tiny fraction of the beauty and cultural wonders the country has to offer. Lima is quickly becoming the world’s foodie capital, with adventurous young chefs flocking to the city. Work your way inland to Cusco for its colonial architecture and the Sacred Valley of the Incas to see traditional art being made. Continue your ascent into the Andes on horseback or with a trekking guide, or perhaps indulge in a luxury river cruise down the Amazon.

Best time to go: September-October to capture the best temperatures of the coast, the Andes, and the interior lowlands
