Into Ireland: From Wicklow to the Wild Atlantic Way

Kenmare & Sheen Falls

The drive from Kinsale to Sheen Falls is worth doing slowly to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Ireland’s South-West, the beginning of the Wild Atlantic Way, is a paradise of sprawling coastline boarded by soft farms, quaint towns, deep inlets, and mountain roads so spectacular you could stay and enjoy them forever.

But you must keep going, because you must experience the joys of Sheen Falls Lodge.

Sheen Falls Lodge sits at the head of Kenmare Bay in County Kerry. In the evenings, you can sit on the front lawn and watch the sun set behind the Iveragh Peninsula across the water. The hotel is appointed in a mid-century modern decor that compliments the laid back but elegant atmosphere. Running along one side are the eponymous Sheen Falls, which bubbled and frothed right under our bedroom window.

Make sure you go for dinner at The Falls or The Restaurant Lounge, the hotel’s main dining options. You’re likely to be greeted by Seamus, the amiable, omnipresent General Manager.

Just across the bay is the town of Kenmare, which fulfills most travellers’ image of a typical Irish town. Its cheerful pastel streets lend a more authentic feel than nearby Killarney. If you visit on a Wednesday, check out the weekly Farmers Market. Kenmare is also known for its handmade lace, which you can find in numerous shops in town.
