Australia constantly tops lists of most popular vacation destinations: Best Adventure Travel, Best Family Travel, Best Solo Travel. There’s a reason people cross continents and oceans to get there.
Southern Ocean Lodge – Kangaroo Island
After 24 hours of flying, the only thing you want is a chance to relax and recuperate. Upon arrival at Southern Ocean Lodge, I knew it was the perfect choice for my first stop.
Situated on Kangaroo Island, known as the Galapagos of Australia, Southern Ocean Lodge couldn’t be more remote. The lodge neighbours Flinders Chase National Park, home to unique granite rock formations and a
colony of fur seals. Kangaroo Island is renowned for its wildlife – here you will see the eponymous kangaroos, as well as koalas, sea lions, wallabies, and wombats.
But first you must be persuaded to leave the hotel. The design is stunning and the service impeccable. It immediately made my Top 5 list of hotels in the world. Each suite is graced with a panoramic view of the ocean and the breathtaking sunrise over the cliffs.
Southern Ocean Lodge includes a number of complimentary experiences. On my first day I took a walk with a naturalist to view kangaroo grazing grounds, and then to Seal
Bay to stand within feet of Australian sea lions and learn about local research projects. Another outing was a heritage tour to discover the natural and cultural history of the island. And I would always recommend saving time for the Southern
Spa for a treatment to refresh body and spirit.
