Travellers usually want to fly to their destination on the shortest possible route. But certain layovers can add a new layer of depth to your journey. This September, I experienced 20 hours in Abu Dhabi, the glittering capital of the United Arab Emirates.
To feel refreshed on a long layover, be deliberate in your choice of aircraft for the first flight. I flew the Etihad Airbus A380 from Sydney, Australia to Abu Dhabi, a 15-hour journey made comfortable by Etihad’s luxurious seating arrangements. The upper deck of the
plane is reserved for Business Class, First Class, and the exclusive Residence, the only 3-room suite in the sky (think private butler, private bathroom with full shower, and double bed).
Upon arrival in Abu Dhabi, and after a stop in the Etihad Arrivals Lounge to refresh, I met my private tour guide to begin a tailored day of discovery.
Abu Dhabi is not a city for walking. Even if it weren’t over 30°C for most of the year, the different sections are too spread out to get from one to the other on foot. A private guide and driver are necessary to help you get around and see all you want to experience.
